Motorized Cart & Low Speed Vehicle City Ordinance

CITY ORDINANCE NO. 2022-01. Sections 50-57.

The Jefferson City Council has passed a motorized cart and Low Speed Vehicle ordinance now. The ordinance allows for Personal Transportation Vehicles (Motorized carts) and Low Speed Vehicles to be operated on city streets posted 25mph or lower.

What is Motorized Cart?

Motorized cart OCGA §§ 40-1-1 (17.3)

Every motor vehicle having no less than four wheels and an unladen weight of 1,300 pounds or less and which cannot operate at more than 20 miles per hour.

Note: If vehicle is used for any purpose other than golf on a golf course, it is not a golf cart under this definition.

Low-speed

LSV means any four-wheeled electric vehicle whose top speed attainable in one mile is greater than 20 miles per hour but not greater than 25 miles per hour on a paved level surface and which is manufactured in compliance with those federal motor vehicle safety standards for low-speed vehicles set forth in 49 C.F.R. Section 571.500 and in effect on January 1, 2001.

Will My Motorized Cart Require Insurance?

The answer is YES. Motorized Carts and LSV’s must have insurance in order for them to be operated on the city streets.

Where Do I Register my Golf Cart?

Motorized Carts and LSVs may be registered at the Jefferson Police Department. We will start registering now for entire year of 2023.

Do I Have to Register My Motorized Cart or LSV?

Motorized Carts and LSVs must be registered with the City of Jefferson Police Department. The cost to register your Motorized Cart or LSV is $15.00 (Money Order, Check, or Credit Card) You will receive a decal to place on the windshield of the golf cart to be visible at all times. Must be at least 18 years old to register a golf cart. Bring a check or money order made out to the City of Jefferson.
